Profile Thomas Hoyne

Tom Hoyne

Tom has been with File One for the past 5 years in our warehouse and distribution department.

Tom is what Cork people call a “blow in” as he has only lived in Cork for 26 years. Originally from Kilkenny but reared in north Co. Dublin, Tom is a past pupil of Pobal Scoil Iosa, Malahide, and spent a summer or two working in the Pottery Shop, Malahide, made famous by their distinctive radio ads.

The sea air got into Tom’s blood at an early age and he took up an apprenticeship as a shipwright with Malahide Boatyard and later in Skibbereen. Tom sub sequentially joined the Irish Naval Service moving to Cobh and Naval Head Quarters in Haulboline, where he gave 21 good years of service both on board and ashore. By 2006 Tom was eligible for retirement and on leaving the Quartermaster’s Stores he joined File One as our warehouse supervisor.

Customers will know Tom by his jolly temperament, his eagerness to help and his “nothing is impossible” attitude. Tom is a great believer that a Smile will get you further than a scowl. He also loves to talk, typical of a man reared by the sea. Maybe he has a sea shanty or two to share with us.

Tom has other passions other than work & the sea.

Having moved to Cobh it was inevitable that he would meet and fall in love with a Cork girl. Tom is married to Catherine and they have two children, one boy and one girl. Perfect !

Anyone who has met Tom will know there is rugby in his activity list, he played for both the Navel Service and Cobh Pirates Rugby Club, Tom has also coached rugby at juvenile level.

Tom’s other love is the bagpipes. It was in the Naval Service pipe band that Tom learned to play the pipes and when it was disbanded he joined the Cobh pipe band where his has been an active member ever since. Tom has played his pipes all over Ireland, both in the US and on the continent and while the bag pipes may not be every ones favourite musical instrument it is a pleasure to watch and listen to Tom as he pipes his way through many famous tunes.

If you see him playing at Patrick’s Day parades or on the quayside in Cobh greeting international visitors, make sure you give him a big wave
